DIY Wool felt letter garland
It's Ziloen's birthday!
And what better way to celebrate than with a cheerful, handmade garland? With the lovely step-by-step tutorial by Marrit from needle felting studio Droomwerkje, you can make your very own festive garland. An easy and enjoyable project, perfect for taking your time and getting creative.
Material needed
- Felt sheets in beautiful colours
- Felting wool
- Needle felting pillow or foam felting pad
- Felting needles
- A pretty ribbon or cord, approximately 150 cm long
- Fabric scissors
- (Patter) paper

Step 1
First, draw and cut out a paper template for the flags. Make sure that exactly four flags can be cut from one piece of felt. Place the template on the felt and cut out the flags. For this garland, we’re using seven flags.

Step 2
Take small tufts of felting wool and gently roll them between your fingers to form a strand. Don’t roll them too tightly! Place the strand on a felt flag and use the felting needle to needle-felt it into the shape of your desired letter. Repeat this for all the letters on the flags. Leave one flag blank on each end of the garland, without a letter.

Step 3
Needle-felt small flowers around the letters and on the blank flags. Start by making the round centre of each flower, then needle-felt the teardrop-shaped petals around it.

Step 4
Use the tip of your fabric scissors to make two small holes in the top corners of each flag, just large enough to thread the ribbon or cord through. Be careful not to make the holes too big.

Step 5
Thread the ribbon or cord through the holes and arrange the flags evenly along the garland. Tie a small knot at each end of the ribbon to prevent it from fraying.

All done! Now all that’s left is to find the perfect spot to hang your garland — and let the celebration begin!
